Rajasthan's Agri-PV Project Ignites Rural Income Boom, Reshaping India's Green Future

A pioneering Agri-PV project in Rajasthan is demonstrating a game-changing model for Indian farmers, offering the potential to multiply farm incomes up to tenfold by cultivating crops beneath elevated solar panels. This innovative approach, highlighted by an Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) pilot, saw a farmer's earnings jump from ₹40,000 to nearly ₹4 lakh per acre, proving that agriculture and clean energy can thrive together. The initiative is a critical step towards empowering rural communities and addressing India's twin challenges of food and energy security. This breakthrough comes as India races towards its ambitious 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity target by 2030, a goal that demands vast stretches of land for solar power generation. Agri-PV systems, supported by schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM scheme), offer a smart solution by allowing dual land use, preventing conflict between food production and renewable energy expansion. Beyond financial gains, these systems create favorable microclimate beneath the panels, reducing water loss and regulating temperatures, which can boost crop resilience in arid regions like Rajasthan. The state has already received significant Central Financial Assistance (CFA) for decentralized solar projects under PM-KUSUM, further accelerating this transition. Looking ahead, the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has announced PM-KUSUM 2.0, which includes a dedicated 10 GW Agri-PV component, signaling a strong governmental push for this technology. While high upfront costs and clear policy frameworks remain key hurdles, ongoing partnerships, such as between Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Limited (RRECL) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), aim to streamline deployment. The success of these farmer-owned models could transform millions of Indian farmers from mere food producers ('Annadata') into both food and energy providers ('Urjadata'), securing sustainable livelihoods and contributing significantly to India's clean energy future.
