NASA is rapidly turning its ambitious vision for a permanent Moon Base at the lunar South Pole into reality, with more than twenty robotic landings slated through 2029 to lay down critical infrastructure. This aggressive Phase I strategy leverages a new fleet of commercial spacecraft, with companies like Blue Origin, Firefly Aerospace, Intuitive Machines, and Voyager Lunar Systems already developing landers for deliveries by 2028. This isn't just about sending probes; it's about building a robust foundation for future human presence, piece by painstaking piece. The strategic push focuses on the lunar South Pole, a region believed to harbor vital water ice, which could be a game-changer for sustained human operations, providing drinking water, oxygen, and even rocket fuel. Recent missions, like the Intuitive Machines' IM-2 carrying PRIME-1 in February 2025, have already started demonstrating resource extraction technologies, despite some challenges. Meanwhile, the VIPER Rover, a crucial scout for water ice, was revived in September 2025 with Blue Origin tasked for its late 2027 delivery, recently completing its final system checks. Looking ahead, the Artemis program is accelerating with a revised roadmap: Artemis III, now a crewed Earth-orbit test in 2027, will prove out human landing system docking, paving the way for Artemis IV, the first crewed lunar landing since Apollo, in early 2028. Critically, Artemis V, planned for late 2028, will mark the tangible beginning of on-site Moon Base construction. With cancelled Gateway hardware being repurposed for surface infrastructure, and new technologies like Radioisotope Heating Units under development to brave lunar nights, NASA and its commercial partners are not just returning to the Moon, they're preparing to stay.
