Mumbai University Puts NEP 2020 Under NIEPA Lens Amidst Sweeping Academic Overhaul

The University of Mumbai (MU) has called in the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) to conduct an independent review of its ambitious three-year journey in implementing the National Education Policy 2020. This critical assessment aims to determine if the widespread academic changes have truly taken root across its numerous affiliated and autonomous colleges, moving beyond just policy documents to real-world impact. This move comes as MU dramatically expands its autonomous college network, now boasting 135 such institutions, a significant jump from 62 in 2023. These colleges, alongside the university's departments, are actively rolling out NEP 2020 core tenets, including new four-year honours and honours with research programmes, a basket of 516 open electives, and a focus on multidisciplinary studies and Indian Knowledge Systems. However, Vice-Chancellor Ravindra Kulkarni has acknowledged that the university is still in the early stages of this massive transformation, with potential areas for improvement. The NIEPA team is expected to visit select colleges to closely examine the practical application of these reforms, looking at everything from curriculum changes to credit systems. The findings of this impact assessment will be crucial in shaping the future trajectory of NEP 2020 implementation at MU, offering valuable insights into its effectiveness on students, faculty, and the broader educational system. It will also highlight the challenges that need to be addressed to ensure India's education system is truly future-ready.
