India, ASEAN Forge Alliance for Climate-Proof Farms Amidst Global Food Jitters

The 9th ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry just wrapped up in New Delhi, charting an ambitious five-year course to build climate-proof farming systems across both regions. Co-chaired by India Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and the Philippines' Agriculture Secretary Francisco P Tiu Laurel, the September 9 summit underscored a collective urgency to bolster food security against intensifying climate shocks and geopolitical uncertainties. The focus is squarely on practical, farmer-centered solutions to safeguard livelihoods and stabilize food supplies for millions. This new Medium-Term Plan of Action for 2026-2030 comes as Southeast Asia and India face rising temperatures, extreme weather, and disruptions to agricultural supply chains, threatening an already vulnerable farmer population. With agriculture being a major economic pillar and employer across these nations, the partnership aims to leverage India extensive agricultural research and digital innovations to develop climate-resilient crops, improve water productivity, and implement AI-enabled farming techniques. The ministers also acknowledged growing challenges like volatile input markets and transboundary pests, making regional collaboration essential, not just desirable. Beyond policy dialogues, the focus will now shift to concrete actions, including fostering stronger linkages among research institutions, technology developers, and farmers themselves. Key areas for implementation range from low-emission rice cultivation, soil health management, and agroforestry to enhancing post-harvest management and developing resilient value chains. The agreement also sets the stage for future exchanges and capacity building, with the 10th Ministerial Meeting slated for 2028 to review progress, emphasizing a long-term, results-oriented commitment to securing a sustainable agricultural future for the region.
