Tamil Nadu Boosts Rooftop Solar with ₹1 Lakh Subsidy, Supercharging National Green Energy Drive

The Tamil Nadu government has just rolled out a new 'Rooftop Solar Subsidy Scheme' as part of its 2026-27 budget, promising a substantial financial boost of up to Rs. 1 lakh to domestic consumers for installing solar panels. This move is a game-changer, converging with the Centre's massive 'Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana' to slash the cost of going solar and drastically reduce household electricity bills across the state. The dual incentive aims to accelerate the adoption of clean energy, making rooftop solar more accessible than ever before. This initiative comes as India pushes to solarize one crore (10 million) households by March 2027 under the 'Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana', a scheme launched in February 2024 with a hefty budget of over Rs. 75,000 crore. While the central scheme already provides a significant subsidy of up to Rs. 78,000 for systems 3 kW or larger, Tamil Nadu's additional top-up will make a 3kW system installation significantly cheaper for residents. As of July 2026, 47.26 lakh households have already embraced rooftop solar nationwide, though Tamil Nadu, with its 320 MW capacity from 88,133 installations, still lags behind other states like Gujarat and Kerala. With Rs. 50 crore earmarked for the state's new scheme, expect a rapid increase in rooftop solar installations across Tamil Nadu, reducing the state's reliance on traditional power sources and contributing to India's ambitious renewable energy targets. The combined subsidies mean a 1kW system, previously costing around Rs. 60,000-70,000, could now be installed for just Rs. 30,000-40,000, bringing energy independence and lower bills within reach for millions. This convergence not only empowers individuals but also marks a critical step towards a greener, more sustainable future for the nation.
