In a decisive move poised to redefine connectivity in India's Northeast, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has greenlit the development of a 135.871 km, four-lane access-controlled highway between Guwahati and Tezpur on National Highway-15 in Assam. Approved on August 6, the ambitious project, costing ₹8,970.20 crore, promises to halve travel times and significantly boost road safety across this vital stretch. A notable inclusion is a 4.9 km Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) near the Tezpur bypass, developed in coordination with the Indian Air Force, highlighting the corridor's strategic importance beyond mere civilian transport. This infrastructure marvel, set to operate under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Toll model, is more than just a road; it's a critical component of India's wider regional development strategy, including initiatives like PM Gati Shakti and Bharatmala Pariyojana. It will provide seamless access to key economic, social, and logistics hubs, including industrial parks, aspirational districts like Darrang and Udalguri, and major tourist spots such as the Maa Kamakhya Temple and Kaziranga National Park. The project aims to decongest the existing NH-27 and link Assam more efficiently with neighboring Arunachal Pradesh, accelerating the region's transformation into an economic growth corridor under the Modi government's 'Act East' vision. As construction ramps up, this corridor is expected to dramatically improve freight movement, enhance fuel efficiency, and reduce vehicle operating costs, offering a significant impetus to trade and tourism.
