India's Rural Housing Mission: 3.12 Crore Homes Built, Over 79 Lakh Underway

India's ambitious Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) has reached a significant milestone, with over 3.12 crore (31.2 million) houses completed in rural areas as of August 3. The government informed Parliament that another 79 lakh (7.9 million) sanctioned homes are currently under various stages of construction, underscoring the rapid progress of this flagship scheme aimed at providing permanent shelter across the country. This update highlights a strong push to fulfill the vision of 'Housing for All' in villages. The scheme, managed by the Ministry of Rural Development, is now targeting a massive 4.95 crore (49.5 million) rural houses by March 2029, a goal recently expanded by an additional 2 crore homes. To accelerate this mission, the Centre recently released over ₹10,021 crore in May 2026 as the first installment for the financial year 2026-27, specifically for 12 states with significant housing backlogs. PMAY-G is also known for its 'convergence' approach, integrating with other welfare schemes like Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin for toilets, MGNREGS for labor support, and Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana for LPG connections, ensuring beneficiaries receive not just a house, but a complete home with basic amenities. Looking ahead, the focus remains on overcoming challenges such as land availability, material costs, and accelerating approvals to ensure timely completion of the remaining houses. Digital monitoring tools like AwaasSoft and geo-tagging continue to play a critical role in tracking progress and maintaining transparency. As the scheme moves towards its extended deadline, the government is urging states to expedite construction, emphasizing PMAY-G's role as a key driver for rural economic activity and an improvement in the quality of life for millions of families.
