Kolkata-based defense Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has officially launched 'Sanghamitra', the first of four Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) for the Indian Navy. The vessel, measuring 113 meters in length and displacing 3,000 tonnes, boasts significantly enhanced endurance (8,500 nautical miles) and firepower compared to conventional OPV, with a top speed of 23 knots. Launched by Sarita Vatsayan, wife of Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, 'Sanghamitra' is designed for diverse missions including protection of offshore assets, Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO), Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) operations, and vital surveillance and Mine Warfare duties. This launch signifies a critical stride in India's naval modernization efforts and its 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) initiative, bolstering indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities amid heightened geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific. As a key strategic asset, 'Sanghamitra' will enhance the Indian Navy Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) and operational readiness, enabling it to project influence and ensure stability across critical sea lanes. The global macroeconomic environment, characterized by escalating defense spending and a renewed focus on maritime security by major powers, underscores the strategic relevance of such advanced naval platforms, positioning India as a crucial player in regional security architecture against a backdrop of evolving maritime threats and rising tensions.
