India's Wind Energy Push Gains Pace as SECI Awards 1.5 GW Projects

India's ambitious clean energy transition just got another significant boost as the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) finalized its Tranche-XX auction, awarding nearly 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS)-connected wind power projects. While the tender aimed for 2 GW, 1,495 MW of capacity was successfully allocated, signaling strong developer interest despite the slight undersubscription. Gentari Renewables India Castor One emerged as the frontrunner, securing 200 MW at a competitive tariff of Rs 3.78 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). This latest allocation underscores India's relentless drive toward its aggressive renewable energy targets, particularly the aim for 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. SECI, now a Navratna-status central public sector enterprise, plays a pivotal role, using its tariff-based competitive bidding process and long-term Power Purchase Agreements to de-risk projects for developers and foster a robust market. The projects' ISTS connectivity is crucial, allowing wind-rich states to transmit power efficiently across the national grid to demand centers, enhancing grid stability and enabling a broader reach for clean energy. Going forward, the successful bidders will now proceed with land acquisition, project development, and securing all necessary approvals, with commissioning expected within 18-24 months from signing the PPAs. This fresh wave of wind energy capacity will be vital as India works to balance its growing energy demand with decarbonization goals, even as it continues to rely heavily on coal. Observers will be watching how these projects integrate into the grid and contribute to the country's evolving energy mix, especially with new policy initiatives around green hydrogen and the upcoming carbon market by mid-2026.
