Kerala Fast-Tracks Land Acquisition: Supercharging Vizhinjam Port's Global Trade Ambitions

The Kerala government is moving to significantly amend its existing land acquisition laws, aiming to slash the process from a lengthy 15 months to just six. This urgent legislative push is crucial to unlock land swiftly for the massive expansion of the Vizhinjam International Seaport, which only days ago began full export-import operations, signaling its transition into a direct gateway for India's global trade. Without this accelerated land availability for crucial logistics and industrial infrastructure, officials fear Kerala could miss out on the port's immense economic potential. This isn't just about faster paperwork; it's a strategic pivot to secure Kerala's place on the global maritime map. With Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) already committing an additional Rs 16,000 crore for a Phase 2 expansion to boost the port's capacity to 5.7 million TEU by December 2028, the demand for land for supporting infrastructure like logistics parks, container yards, and industrial zones is skyrocketing. The state has seen high land prices and competition from neighboring Tamil Nadu, which is aggressively developing industrial parks, underscoring the urgency of Kerala's move to create a competitive industrial ecosystem around Vizhinjam. Looking ahead, the proposed amendments will introduce a 'land bank' by combining government, public sector, and private land, alongside a 'single-window system' to streamline approvals for investors. The government has already approved acquiring 230 acres at an estimated cost of Rs 810 crore for immediate development. This fast-tracked approach, coupled with initiatives like 'Mission Samudra' for port-led industrial growth, demonstrates Kerala's determination to transform Vizhinjam from a major port into a comprehensive economic powerhouse, but swift and transparent implementation will be key.
