The massive demand for artificial intelligence has unexpectedly turned old, broken mobile phones into a valuable commodity in Vijayawada, with traders now offering good cash or gifts for handsets once considered useless. This new 'scrap market' is buzzing because a global shortage of vital computer chips has made components from dead 4G and 5G phones highly sought after by recyclers and manufacturers. Some dealers are reportedly paying up to Rs 25,000 for non-working devices, a trend that began around December last year and is still growing strong. The sudden value surge in discarded phones is directly linked to the intense 'AI boom' which is redirecting a huge portion of global memory chip production towards powerful AI data centers, leaving consumer electronics scrambling for parts. Up to 70% of all memory chips made globally in 2026 are expected to go to these data centers, leading to memory chip prices skyrocketing by over 300% in some areas and causing what some call 'RAMaggedon.' While this creates an economic opportunity, particularly in cities like Vijayawada where old phones are being collected, the components are not processed locally. Instead, they are sold to larger traders in major hubs like Hyderabad and Mumbai, highlighting a gap in local recycling infrastructure. Looking ahead, Andhra Pradesh introduced a new Standard Operating Procedure for e-waste collection in December 2025, aiming for better management across its urban areas, with plans for more district-level disposal units. However, the booming market for undocumented, non-functional phones also brings risks, as police in Vijayawada are already warning about potential cybercrime concerns. Stolen phones could be dismantled for parts, making them much harder to trace using traditional methods like IMEI numbers. This makes the call for a more formal, secure recycling system even more urgent to protect both consumers and the environment.
