Pakistan Higher Education Commission (HEC) has mandated a three-credit-hour 'Introduction to Artificial Intelligence' course for all undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in both public and private universities nationwide, with implementation slated to begin in the Fall 2026 academic session. This sweeping directive aims to equip every graduate with foundational AI knowledge, recognizing its pervasive impact across all sectors and its critical role in shaping future economies. The move signals a concerted effort to align Pakistan higher education system with global technological advancements and prepare a future-ready workforce. This educational overhaul is a direct outgrowth of Pakistan ambitious National AI Policy 2025, which outlines a strategic vision to invest $1 billion in artificial intelligence by 2030 and establish a comprehensive AI Innovation Ecosystem. The HEC's decision, endorsed by a consultative meeting of vice-chancellors, emphasizes the necessity of digital literacy and ethical AI understanding, moving beyond viewing AI as an optional subject. Information Technology University (ITU) Lahore has already developed and shared initial course modules, which were approved during the 45th HEC meeting, providing a standardized framework for institutions across the country. While the mandate sets a clear trajectory for digital transformation, its effective implementation hinges on addressing significant challenges, including a shortage of qualified faculty, inadequate technological infrastructure, and the need for robust faculty training programs. The government also plans extensive AI training programs under initiatives like the Prime Minister Youth Program (PMYP) and aims to upskill one million non-IT professionals by 2030, underscoring the scale of this national endeavor. How universities adapt their curriculum development and ensure equitable access to quality AI education will be critical to realizing Pakistan aspiration of becoming a competitive player in the global AI landscape.
