AI Revolutionises English Learning: Punjab Schools Adopt Personalised Path for Lakhs of Students

Punjab has officially ditched the 'one-size-fits-all' English lesson plan for hundreds of thousands of government school students, now embracing an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted learning program called 'The English Edge'. Launched in October 2025, this initiative, a partnership between the Punjab Government and English Helper, is already helping students in Classes IX to XII significantly boost their English skills by adapting to individual learning speeds. This move marks a big step for the state, especially as the National Education Policy 2020 pushes for more tech in classrooms across India. The AI program starts with an online test that puts students into one of six 'English proficiency levels', giving them study materials that fit just right. While getting used to digital tools was a small hurdle initially, schools quickly set up help desks, and now over 93% of the 3.5 lakh enrolled students have been assessed, with many showing at least one level of improvement. This shift is part of a larger push by the Punjab government, which recently announced a full AI curriculum rollout for all government schools starting August 2026. Looking ahead, this personalized approach promises to not only make Punjab students more fluent in English but also better prepared for future jobs where strong communication skills are key. As AI becomes a core part of the school syllabus, not just for English but across subjects, it sets a powerful example for other states in India.
