The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) has fiercely rejected the Union Government recently announced Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Rabi crops for the 2027-28 marketing season, branding the increases as 'misleading' and 'grossly inadequate'. This backlash comes just days after the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved marginal hikes, notably a mere Rs 25 per quintal for wheat, claiming a substantial 50%-106% return over farmers' production costs. At the heart of AIKS contention is the government's method of calculating the Cost of Cultivation, specifically its reliance on the A2+FL formula, which farmers argue ignores crucial expenses like the rental value of owned land and interest on fixed capital, as covered by the more comprehensive C2 Cost. Farmers' bodies, including AIKS, are demanding MSP based on the Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Commission recommended C2+50% Formula, a long-standing point of contention that has fueled previous widespread farmer protests. The confrontation signals potential for renewed agricultural unrest across India, with AIKS president Rajan Kshirsagar warning of intensified agitation if farmer livelihoods continue to be undermined. As key Rabi crop sowing approaches, the government faces pressure to bridge the trust deficit with the farming community, who continue to press for a legally guaranteed MSP that truly reflects their comprehensive expenses and ensures fair remuneration.
