Aldi Scotland has officially launched the eleventh iteration of its Scottish Sport Fund, inviting grassroots sports clubs across the nation to apply for grants of up to £3,000. The fund, which opened applications on September 28, 2026, aims to inject crucial financial support into local clubs, helping them acquire essential equipment, enhance facilities, and generally boost participation in sports. Since its inception in 2016, this initiative has channelled over £500,000 to more than 650 clubs, demonstrating its significant impact on community sports development in Scotland. This year's fund builds on a decade of commitment to making sport more accessible, a sentiment echoed by Aldi Scotland regional managing directors, Tom Brearey and Sandy Mitchell. The need for such funding is clear, with other significant schemes also in play, like the Scottish FA Pitching In fund distributing £8.14 million for 2026/27 to improve football facilities and the Scottish Government £20 million Summer of Sport programme focused on increasing youth participation. These efforts collectively address the ongoing challenge of supporting local sports, which often rely heavily on community backing and external grants to thrive. Applications for the 2026 Scottish Sport Fund are open regionally, with the deadline for Edinburgh & Lothians clubs set for October 25. After an Aldi Scotland judging panel shortlists top clubs in each area, the final winners will be decided by a public vote on social media, adding a community engagement aspect to the selection process. This blend of corporate sponsorship and public involvement underscores a broader trend of collaborative efforts to sustain and grow local sports, ensuring more people get the chance to participate and benefit from physical activity.
