Andhra Pradesh Ignites Smart LED Revolution Across Cities, Targets March 2027 Completion

Andhra Pradesh has kicked off a major rollout of 10.5 lakh smart LED streetlights across its 123 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), in a significant move towards building a greener, more tech-savvy urban landscape. This ambitious project, spearheaded by the state government in partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), aims to slash electricity consumption and carbon emissions, with the first phase targeted for completion by March 2027. The initiative leverages an advanced Individual Light Monitoring (ILM) network and a Centralized Control and Monitoring System (CCMS), enabling real-time operation, fault detection, and predictive maintenance across the state's urban areas. While the entire 10.5 lakh conventional streetlights will eventually be replaced, 7.5 lakh are slated for installation in the initial phase. The urgency is palpable, with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu pushing for rapid execution, especially in Visakhapatnam, where a substantial portion is expected to be ready by the end of September 2026, just in time to showcase at the upcoming CII Partnership Summit in November. This project is also a key part of Andhra Pradesh broader commitment to climate-resilient urban infrastructure and its 'Swarna Andhra Vision 2047' for sustainable development. Once fully operational, the project is projected to save an impressive 19.57 million units of electricity annually, drastically cutting municipal energy bills and maintenance costs, while significantly reducing urban carbon emissions. With implementation agreements already signed with over 120 ULBs, the focus now shifts to finalising the technology ecosystem with vendors and expediting field surveys. The successful deployment of this 'AI-enabled' lighting system could position Andhra Pradesh as a national leader in smart, sustainable urban infrastructure, setting a precedent for other states.
