Andhra Pradesh's local body elections have plunged into fresh controversy as the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has formally accused the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) of trying to disrupt the polls through violence and intimidation. On Saturday, leaders from the NDA alliance lodged a complaint with the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (AP SEC), handing over video evidence that allegedly shows YSRCP cadres attacking rival candidates, damaging property, and even confronting police personnel to prevent a fair election process. This high-stakes political drama unfolds amidst already rescheduled election dates and direct intervention from the Supreme Court of India. Both the NDA, which includes the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Jana Sena Party (JSP), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the YSRCP have traded serious allegations of electoral malpractice, with YSRCP chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy also claiming his party's candidates faced obstruction and that the state administration is colluding against them. The Supreme Court previously directed the AP SEC to review complaints and postpone the final list of candidates until October 25, leading to a new schedule for polling on November 1 for Urban Local Bodies and later in November for other local bodies. Now, the AP SEC is tasked with examining the new video evidence and the NDA demand for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe, along with a controversial request to de-recognize the YSRCP. Meanwhile, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy party is also preparing to return to the Supreme Court with fresh evidence of alleged violations. With local body elections crucial for securing vital central government funds and strengthening grassroots governance, all eyes are on the AP SEC next move and the courts as Andhra Pradesh navigates this intense political battle.
