Andhra Pradesh's state-owned thermal power stations have hit a new high, generating a record 19,268 Million Units (MU) of electricity from April to September 2026. This impressive 13.1% jump over last year comes as Special Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand revealed robust coal procurement and power purchase strategies are helping the state navigate ongoing energy challenges and seasonal demand spikes. This achievement is a bright spot amidst broader national concerns over coal supplies. This record output in Andhra Pradesh contrasts with a national backdrop of rising electricity demand, which saw a 10% increase in 2026, the highest in a decade. Many thermal power plants across India are still facing 'critical coal stocks,' holding less than the recommended inventory, largely due to a surge in demand and logistical hurdles in the supply chain. The draft National Electricity Policy (NEP) 2026 is currently under discussion to address these systemic issues, including enhancing grid management and ensuring financial viability in the power sector. Adding to the complexity, the looming threat of El Niño conditions is raising concerns about potential impacts on rainfall and temperatures, further stressing the power grid. Looking ahead, Andhra Pradesh has already laid out plans to procure an additional 4,184.60 MU from October 2026 to March 2027 and secured imported coal to manage anticipated demand and any unexpected outages. The state is actively transferring coal linkages to more reliable sources like Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) and Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) to ensure consistent fuel availability. The focus remains on strategic coal logistics, planned maintenance, and advance power procurement, showcasing a proactive approach to maintaining reliable electricity supply for its agricultural, industrial, and domestic consumers.
