Andhra Pradesh Unleashes Bold Energy Plan for 24/7 Power, Battling El Niño

Andhra Pradesh just unveiled a massive energy roadmap to guarantee round-the-clock electricity, targeting not only rising demand but also the harsh realities of El Niño. This ambitious plan includes a significant boost to both thermal and renewable energy capacity, alongside evaluating a large 1,344 MW pumped hydro storage project and leveraging advanced battery storage. The move comes as the state grapples with a 20% surge in August's power consumption, highlighting an urgent need for robust solutions. The state's energy department special chief secretary, K Vijayanand, confirmed plans to procure 1,600 MW of new thermal power through competitive bidding, ensuring developers maintain a 15-day coal stock to prevent disruptions. Simultaneously, Andhra Pradesh is aggressively deploying 1,500 MW/6,000 MWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and advancing another 500 MW/1,000 MWh BESS project with NHPC under the Centre's Viability Gap Funding scheme, which was already approved by APERC in March 2026. This multi-pronged approach aims to curb solar power wastage during the day and meet critical evening peak demands that recently hit 286 million units. With September's power demand projected to climb to 14,150 MW, the focus shifts to rapid implementation and regulatory approvals. The state is actively evaluating the 1,344 MW pumped hydro storage project via SECI, which recently awarded significant pumped storage capacity to developers like Greenko, Tata Power, and Torrent Energy Storage Solutions, indicating a clear path forward for such initiatives. These comprehensive measures are crucial for fortifying Andhra Pradesh's grid against extreme weather, securing reliable power for households, industries, and agriculture, and positioning the state as a leader in sustainable energy management.
