Arizona's Aquifers Face Evaporation Crisis as ASU-Led Research Uncovers Stark Reality

A new report from the Arizona Tri-University Recharge and Water Reliability Project (ATUR), a joint effort led by Arizona State University (ASU) and two other state universities, reveals that a staggering 95% of Arizona's precipitation is lost to the atmosphere through evapotranspiration. This critical finding, spearheaded by ASU researcher Giuseppe Mascaro, underscores the urgent need for innovative solutions to capture and retain water as the state grapples with diminishing water supplies. The project is now diving deeper into how urban infrastructure like drywells and retention/detention basins can effectively contribute to groundwater recharge. This alarming data arrives amidst a deepening water crisis in Arizona, marked by an overall reduction in total water storage and a significant Tier 1 shortage on the Colorado River for 2026, which slashes the state's entitlement by over half a million acre-feet. The ATUR project, requested by the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR), provides a Decision Support Framework and a Recharge Opportunities Matrix to guide water managers in identifying and prioritizing water capture strategies, especially crucial for high-potential areas like the Mogollon Rim. Simultaneously, another ASU professor, Jay Famiglietti, recently received international recognition for using NASA satellites to track groundwater depletion globally, a problem acutely felt in the Southwestern United States. Looking ahead, Arizona is actively pursuing multiple fronts to secure its water future. The Arizona Water Banking Authority confirmed this week it will use stored underground water to backfill city supplies impacted by Colorado River cutbacks, a move aimed at providing much-needed clarity. Federally, Senator Mark Kelly has championed the Water Resources Development Act of 2026 (WRDA) to bolster the state's water infrastructure and flood resilience, while Governor Katie Hobbs continues to expand groundwater protections through Active Management Areas. However, the recent legislative session saw limited progress on contentious water bills, highlighting ongoing political challenges in implementing statewide solutions and emphasizing the continued reliance on both scientific innovation and local community-driven initiatives.
