Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has just pushed for aggressive acceleration on the state's ambitious healthcare overhaul, directing officials to ensure the timely completion of 11 ongoing and 4 upcoming medical colleges. This decisive review, held at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati, underscores a critical commitment to delivering a 'world-class healthcare' system that's both advanced and affordable for every resident. The move comes as Assam embarks on its largest-ever expansion of 'healthcare infrastructure', aiming for a total of 21 medical colleges by 2026-27 and a massive investment of nearly INR 50,000 crore in the sector. This broad vision, often articulated as 'Swasth Assam' and 'New Assam', is designed to transform the state into a regional healthcare hub, minimizing the need for residents to seek treatment elsewhere and attracting 'medical tourism' from neighboring areas. Recent discussions with Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda also highlighted strategies to embed advanced technologies like 'robotic surgeries' and 'AI-enabled healthcare system' into public hospitals, alongside establishing nursing colleges in every district to boost medical manpower. Looking ahead, the focus is squarely on rigorous 'systematic monitoring' and execution. The Chief Minister's directives include coordinating with the Forest Department for plantation drives on new campuses, fostering sustainable and aesthetically pleasing environments. With the National Medical Commission (NMC) setting the regulatory framework for 'medical education' and national initiatives like the 'Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM)' rapidly expanding with 100 crore 'Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA)' linked, Assam healthcare expansion is poised for a transformative period, promising better access and specialized care for millions.
