Assam Floods: Minister Hazarika Launches Urgent Paddy Nursery Drive for Devastated Farmers

Assam Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika has urgently launched community paddy nurseries and distributed vital seedlings in Charaideo district, one of the areas worst-hit by the recent devastating monsoon floods, as the state grapples with a rising death toll and widespread agricultural devastation. This swift action aims to help thousands of affected farmers resume cultivation immediately, bringing a glimmer of hope amidst the crisis. With over 80 lives lost and nearly 1.35 lakh people still reeling across five districts as of early August 2026, the Assam government is intensifying its diverse relief and rehabilitation efforts. Charaideo, alongside Sivasagar district, has faced unprecedented rainfall and submerged vast tracts of agricultural land, pushing officials to not only provide immediate paddy seedlings but also explore alternative cultivation options like Rabi crops and horticulture for fields unsuitable for traditional paddy this season. The Centre has stepped in, strengthening the state's response with Rs 379.35 crore sanctioned under the State Disaster Response Fund. Beyond immediate crop revival, the State government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is now focusing on longer-term recovery, including financial assistance, waivers on land revenue and electricity bills, and detailed assessments for increased compensation for damaged homes and livelihoods. As floodwaters slowly recede, the challenge shifts to preventing a potential public health crisis from stagnant water and ensuring that sustainable agricultural practices are adopted to build greater resilience against Assam increasingly 'normal' annual deluges.
