In a massive push for energy independence and economic growth, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, September 20, 2026, laid the foundation stone for Adani Power Limited's 3,200 Megawatt Ultra-Supercritical Thermal Power Plant in Chapar, Dhubri district. This ₹48,000 crore project, set to become the Northeast's largest power asset, promises to significantly boost Assam's electricity supply and create thousands of jobs. The project is a cornerstone of Adani Group's broader commitment to invest over ₹80,000 crore across Assam in power, aviation, and cement sectors. Beyond this thermal plant, the group is also developing two Pumped Storage Plants through Adani Green Energy and has already operationalized Terminal 2 at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati. This aligns with Assam's ambitious target to become a power-surplus state and the 'Green Energy Hub' of Northeast India, as outlined in its 2026-27 Budget with a total power sector investment plan of ₹77,353 crore. With phased commissioning expected to begin in December 2030 and full capacity by 2032, the Dhubri plant aims to bridge Assam's projected electricity demand deficit and reduce its energy dependency. The project is anticipated to generate up to 20,000 jobs during construction and 5,000 permanent roles upon operation, fueling local industrialisation and contributing substantially to the state's SGST revenues. This landmark development underscores the growing investor confidence in Assam's economic trajectory.
