Assam has officially begun a significant overhaul of its voter lists, known as the Special Summary Revision (SSR), with critical deadlines rapidly approaching. The state's Chief Electoral Officer announced that the draft electoral rolls will be published on November 12, followed by a month-long window until December 11 for citizens to file any claims or objections. A key part of this exercise involves the 'rationalization' of polling stations, a process that is expected to be finalized by November 2, aimed at making voting more accessible and efficient for everyone. This revision holds particular importance for Assam, which was notably excluded from the nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in 2025 due to ongoing complexities with its unique citizenship laws and the pending National Register of Citizens (NRC) process. The current SSR seeks to update voter information by removing duplicate names, deceased electors, and those who have shifted residences, adhering to strict Election Commission of India guidelines to ensure an accurate and error-free voter list. The Election Commission has also introduced measures to prevent the bulk filing of objections and ensures thorough verification by Electoral Registration Officer for any proposed deletions. With claims and objections slated for disposal by December 28, the final electoral rolls are scheduled for publication on January 4, 2027. This meticulous process is crucial for upholding the integrity of the state's democratic process and will set the stage for future elections. Citizens turning 18 by January 1, 2027, or even later in the year, can also submit advance applications, ensuring a truly inclusive electoral roll.
