The Assam government has unveiled a landmark Rs 2.85 lakh crore budget for 2026-27, with a massive Rs 25,873 crore earmarked for Education, Sports, Art, and Culture, signaling a strong commitment to student welfare and academic development across the state. Key announcements include a significant Rs 1,750 crore investment to bolster universities and support autonomous colleges, alongside the expansion of crucial student financial aid programs like the Jibon Prerana, Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina Asoni, and Mukhyamantrir Nijut Babu Asoni schemes. These initiatives are set to provide direct financial assistance and fee waivers to lakhs of students, aiming to reduce dropout rates and enhance access to higher education. This robust focus on education comes as the state government, led by Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, aims to foster a 'stronger, regionally balanced and future-ready higher education ecosystem.' The budget reflects a strategic shift, discontinuing the Dr Banikanta Kakati Meritorious Award, which previously distributed scooters, to redirect resources towards broader-impact cash assistance schemes benefiting a wider student base. Moreover, existing programs like the Pragyan Bharati Fee Waiver Scheme will continue, offering free admission to eligible students with parental incomes below Rs 4 lakh, while new skill development initiatives will train youth in cutting-edge fields like AI and foreign languages to boost employability. Looking ahead, applications for the Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina Asoni and Mukhyamantrir Nijut Babu Asoni schemes are slated to open in August 2026, with benefit transfers commencing from October 2026, expected to reach over 5.3 lakh students. The Jibon Prerana scheme will restart in September 2026, extending monthly financial support to nearly 48,366 graduates. The continued provincialisation of venture colleges and scrutiny of over 15,000 teacher applications under the Guru Dakshina scheme further underscore the government's long-term vision to uplift both students and educators, creating a more inclusive and skilled workforce for Assam.
