Assam is grappling with a severe flood crisis, as the death toll has tragically climbed to 41, with over 9 lakh (900,000) people now affected across 25 districts. Climate change continues to play a critical role, causing more erratic and intense rainfall events, turning predictable seasonal flows into volatile, destructive bursts. As the India Meteorological Department issues a 'Yellow Alert' for continued rainfall, the immediate focus remains on rescue and relief, with the Indian Army, NDRF, and SDRF deploying personnel and drones to deliver essential supplies and evacuate stranded residents. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has pledged extensive support, including ex-gratia payments for the deceased, acknowledging the unprecedented nature of floods in several Upper Assam districts.
