Ather Energy has dramatically altered India's electric two-wheeler landscape by launching the Konarc, a mass-market scooter starting at Rs 99,999, aimed squarely at capturing up to 90 percent of the country's EV buyers. This strategic move positions Ather, previously known for its premium offerings, directly against established giants like TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto in the highly competitive and rapidly expanding budget-friendly segment. The Konarc, unveiled at the recent Ather Community Day, is the first product built on Ather's new EL platform, specifically engineered for affordability and widespread appeal rather than just high performance. This aggressive push comes as the Indian electric two-wheeler market sees robust growth, with sales soaring and traditional automotive players like TVS and Bajaj consolidating their lead. In July 2026, TVS held a significant market share, while Bajaj Auto was also a strong contender, with Ather ranking third. Ather's co-founder and CEO, Tarun Mehta, acknowledged that while the company had diverse products like the 450 series and the family-focused Rizta, it lacked the crucial sub-Rs 1.25 lakh price point that makes up nearly half of the e-scooter market. To address India's persistent charging infrastructure challenges, Ather also introduced 'Ather Node,' a smart system for apartment complexes designed to manage power efficiently across many chargers without straining building electricity. The Konarc rollout, however, might face immediate waiting lists, as Ather's current Hosur plant already struggles to meet demand. The company plans to temporarily reduce Rizta production to prioritize the Konarc, with significant capacity expansion expected when the first phase of its Sambhajinagar plant comes online in Q4 of this fiscal year, boosting total monthly production to 77,000 units. This scale-up, combined with the accessible pricing and new charging solutions, signals Ather's serious intent to not just compete, but lead the mainstream electric scooter revolution in India.
