In a major leap for clean energy research, the United States and the United Kingdom have officially linked their cutting-edge fusion supercomputer, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) STELLAR-AI platform and the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) SUNRISE supercomputer. The partnership, formalized with a Joint Declaration of Intent on September 14, 2026, during the Global Fusion Policy Summit in London, aims to harness AI to dramatically accelerate the quest for commercially viable fusion energy. This transatlantic collaboration means researchers can now share experimental data and train advanced AI models across two of the world's most powerful fusion computing systems. The SUNRISE - STELLAR-AI Federation is designed to overcome a critical bottleneck in fusion development: the need for massive volumes of high-quality data and rapid simulations to understand the complex behavior of superheated plasma. By combining data from PPPL National Spherical Torus Experiment-Upgrade (NSTX-U) and UKAEA MAST Upgrade, both advanced spherical tokamak, the federation will allow AI models to learn from a broader range of experimental results. This joint effort, building on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June, will also be crucial for developing 'digital twin' of these machines, enabling engineers to test designs and predict plasma behavior virtually before committing to costly hardware changes. Looking ahead, this federation is expected to significantly shorten the design cycle for future fusion power plants, potentially bringing limitless clean energy closer to reality. Scientists anticipate a shared platform will not only optimize existing experiments but also foster the development of a universal 'foundation model' for spherical tokamak and eventually broader fusion device configurations.
