In a groundbreaking move, Ladakh has successfully started diverting a massive 90 million litres of glacier water daily, transforming previously parched farmlands into fertile ground. This pioneering initiative, spearheaded by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, channels glacial melt from the Stok village Nallah into the Igoo-Phey Irrigation Canal, bringing a fresh lease of life to approximately 12 villages and over 1,000 acres of land in the Leh district. The administration achieved this crucial diversion using simple, cost-effective earthwork, avoiding any major capital expenditure. For decades, despite being rich in glacier and snowmelt resources, much of Ladakh cultivable land suffered from severe irrigation shortages, with large volumes of glacial water flowing unused into the Indus River. The region, a high-altitude cold desert, faces unique challenges due to climate change, which has led to shrinking glaciers and unpredictable water patterns, making agricultural productivity precarious. This new strategy effectively bridges the critical gap between abundant untapped water and the pressing need for water security in local communities. This successful model is being hailed as a blueprint for expanding cost-effective water management across the Union Territory, with plans underway to fully utilise the remaining diverted water. Farmers are now set to benefit from higher crop yields, increased incomes, and improved employment opportunities, revitalising the rural economy. The administration's vision is clear: to create a 'Green, Water-Secure, and Self-Sustaining Ladakh' by harnessing every drop of available water, which could inspire similar climate adaptation efforts in other mountain regions globally.
