Top leaders from India's Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and key financial institutions like SIDBI and NABARD have converged in New Delhi for a critical two-day strategy meeting, the PSB Confluence 2026, hosted by the Department of Financial Services (DFS). The central agenda includes tackling the persistent challenge of deposit growth, streamlining liquidity management, and enhancing priority sector lending to align with India's ambitious vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047, known as Viksit Bharat 2047. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, addressing the gathering today, emphasized that the discussions will feed into a high-powered committee on banking reforms to be constituted soon. The urgency stems from a notable gap where bank credit growth has consistently outpaced deposit growth, with household savings increasingly shifting towards equity markets, posing a resource crunch for banks, especially smaller ones. While the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has proactively injected liquidity into the system through measures like Variable Rate Repo (VRR) auctions and Open Market Operations (OMOs) in early 2026 to stabilize conditions, intensified competition for deposits is squeezing margins. Despite these challenges, India's banking sector is on a stronger footing than ever, with Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) at their lowest levels, providing a solid base for further reforms. Looking ahead, the deliberations at the PSB Confluence 2026, covering themes from 'banking for youth' to strengthening rural value chains and reimagining credit cards, are expected to provide concrete recommendations for the upcoming banking reforms committee. This committee, announced in the Union Budget 2026-27, will thoroughly review the financial sector to support India's long-term economic goals, aiming for structural strengthening and greater operational agility. The government has signaled swift action on these recommendations, underscoring a pivotal moment for India's financial system in shaping its inclusive economic development.
