Punjabi singer Resham Singh Anmol has recently fueled the national debate around E20 petrol after his luxury Land Rover Defender 110 suffered a fuel pump failure, which his service center blamed on 'bad fuel'. Anmol, whose vehicle is E20-compliant, publicly alleged a 'scam' where petrol pumps might be mixing excessive ethanol, demanding authorities to disclose lists of stations offering premium, lower-ethanol fuels. This incident comes amidst a surge of public complaints and social media videos from motorists nationwide, reporting engine problems and reduced mileage after using the new 20% ethanol-blended petrol. The government, however, stands firm, with Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi recently telling Parliament that extensive scientific studies by NITI Aayog, ARAI, and SIAM, alongside real-world data from over 23 crore vehicles, show no verified evidence of widespread engine failures linked to E20. While acknowledging a slight 3-5% mileage drop in some older vehicles, experts and fuel retailers increasingly point to fuel contamination, particularly water ingress causing 'phase separation,' as a significant, often misattributed, cause of vehicle issues, even in E20-compatible cars. This complex situation was further highlighted by a landmark consumer court ruling in July 2026, ordering Maruti Suzuki to replace a customer's car due to E20-related issues, a decision that could set a precedent for future claims. As the controversy brews, Indian motorists are left navigating conflicting information and concerns over vehicle longevity and fuel quality. While new vehicles launched post-April 2023 are designed for E20, a vast majority of India's existing fleet predates this compatibility mandate. The focus now shifts to how the government will address consumer anxieties, ensure fuel quality at the pump, and perhaps, provide clearer guidance on compatible fuel options for all vehicle types, especially given the ongoing reliance on E20 as the standard.
