Bengaluru Professor's Coconut Leaf Straws Build Rs 70 Crore Global Eco-Business

In a big win for green business, a professor from Bengaluru's Christ University, Saji Varghese, has turned a simple idea into a booming Rs 70 crore company, Sunbird Straws, by making straws from coconut leaves. His eco-friendly products are now a global hit, reaching over 25 countries and showing how nature's waste can create wealth and help the planet. This amazing journey started in 2017 when Professor Varghese saw a curled coconut leaf and wondered if it could replace harmful plastic straws. His innovation created straws that are 100% biodegradable, meaning they break down naturally, and have natural properties that make them push water away (hydrophobic) and stop tiny fungi from growing (antifungal), lasting for hours in drinks. This success comes after India banned single-use plastics in 2022, creating a huge need for such alternatives, and his company also helps many rural women by giving them jobs in production centers across states like Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. Looking ahead, Sunbird Straws is not just stopping at straws; they have also started making pens from coconut leaves, called 'Sunbird Scribbles'.
