Bihar Ditches 'Fail' on Board Marksheets, Embraces 'Eligible for Skills'

Bihar has introduced a groundbreaking education reform for its Class 10 and 12 board examination results, replacing the discouraging word 'fail' on marksheets with the more positive term 'Kaushal ke liye patra' or 'Eligible for Skills'. Announced by Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari on August 27, 2026, this progressive move aims to significantly reduce academic stress and the social stigma often associated with board examination outcomes, particularly for students who do not pass their initial attempts. This policy shift aligns with broader national efforts under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes skill development and a holistic approach to learning over rote memorization, preparing students for the real world. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has actively championed comprehensive education system reforms in Bihar, focusing on transparent examination processes and enhanced student welfare initiatives. The state believes that a student's inability to clear an exam does not define their overall talent, directing them instead towards practical, skill-based vocational pathways. In line with this, Bihar has also launched the 'Vidya Saathi' mobile application to connect students with teachers for personalized learning assistance and introduced a 'No-Bag Day' on Saturdays to promote creative activities beyond textbooks. Looking ahead, Bihar is immediately organizing month-long special classes for students taking the Matric supplementary exam, aiming to boost their preparation and improve their chances of success. These initiatives are part of a larger, ongoing commitment to modernize Bihar's education landscape, focusing on quality, accessibility, and equipping students with crucial 21st-century skills for a dynamic workforce. The state is also forming an examination reform committee to explore advanced methods, including the use of technology and artificial intelligence, in student assessments.
