In a major stride for global health cooperation, BRICS nations recently adopted the 'Chandigarh Declaration' during their 16th Health Ministers' Meeting in India, unveiling an ambitious roadmap to secure accessible, affordable, and resilient healthcare for billions across the Global South. Under India's 2026 Chairship, this landmark agreement focuses on building strong health systems, enhancing pandemic preparedness, and championing new initiatives like the 'BRICS Mission for Healthy Lifestyles' and 'Promotion of Mental Health and Wellness'. This collective effort by the expanded BRICS bloc, now comprising 11 member countries, comes at a critical time when post-pandemic recovery challenges and rising non-communicable diseases demand unified action. The declaration emphasizes pooling diverse expertise and resources to fast-track Universal Health Coverage, boost digital health infrastructure, and significantly elevate Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine, which for the first time received a dedicated section in the ministerial declaration, establishing a new expert working group. These moves aim to shield populations from financial hardship and fortify their defenses against future health crises. Looking ahead, these commitments are expected to gain further momentum at the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi this September, where leaders will deliberate on translating these policy goals into tangible outcomes. The focus remains on strengthening health security, ensuring equitable access to medicines, and leveraging innovation to build sustainable health systems that truly serve a people-centric vision across the emerging economies.
