In a decisive move to bolster farmer incomes, Union Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved a massive ₹5,547.99 crore for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) procurement of pulses and oilseeds across Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana for the Kharif Marketing Season 2026-27. This substantial allocation, targeting 7.06 lakh metric tonnes, is a direct intervention under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) aimed at shielding farmers from potential market price drops and ensuring they receive fair value for their produce. The government's commitment comes as India continues its push for self-reliance in these crucial commodities, which are vital for both nutritional security and reducing import dependency. The Price Support Scheme, often implemented by agencies like the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED), ensures a safety net for farmers, preventing distress sales when market rates dip below the pre-announced MSP. Uttar Pradesh leads the allocations with nearly ₹4,000 crore for crops like tur and moong, while Karnataka and Telangana will see significant procurement of soybean, moong, and sunflower, directly benefiting thousands of growers. This robust procurement initiative is expected to stabilize market prices and incentivize domestic production, crucial steps toward agricultural sustainability. The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare has emphasized that the procurement process at designated centers will be transparent, with payments directly transferred to farmers' bank accounts, ensuring timely and direct benefits. Farmers across these states will be closely watching as the scheme rolls out, hoping for enhanced economic security and a stronger agricultural future.
