In a major boost for regional banking, Coastal Local Area Bank Limited, based in Vijayawada, has officially achieved Scheduled Bank status from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This significant upgrade, announced by the RBI on September 4, 2026, places the 26-year-old institution on par with India's larger commercial banks, unlocking new opportunities for growth and enhancing public trust. The move highlights the bank's consistent financial strength and sound management over more than two decades, making it a pivotal moment for the lender and its customers across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This new status means Coastal Bank is now included in the Second Schedule of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, granting it crucial access to RBI liquidity facilities, participation in money market operations, and broader refinancing options. Managing Director and CEO B. Venu Gopala Reddy highlighted that this recognition will allow the bank to attract more institutional depositors and reduce its cost of funds by increasing Current Account and Savings Account (CASA) deposits, ultimately benefiting lending customers. The bank's solid financial health, including a low Non-Performing Assets (NPA) ratio of 0.21% and a robust Capital-to-Risk Weighted Assets Ratio (CRAR) of 24.81% as of March 31, 2026, played a key role in securing this prestigious status. Looking ahead, Coastal Bank plans to leverage its Scheduled Bank status to expand its footprint, with recent RBI approval to open 13 additional branches and extend operations into Vizianagaram, Prakasam in Andhra Pradesh, and Khammam in Telangana. The bank's management aims to offer stronger, more modern, and customer-centric services, continuing its mission of promoting financial inclusion in its operating regions. This development is particularly notable as Local Area Bank (LAB) were originally designed to operate in limited geographical areas, and only a few have managed to achieve such significant regulatory milestones, with Coastal Bank now being the sole scheduled bank headquartered in Andhra Pradesh.
