Cyclonic Storm Murasu has intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm and is barreling towards India's southeastern coast, with landfall expected between Nellore and Narsapur in Andhra Pradesh by the early hours of November 3. Packing winds of 100-110 kmph, gusting up to 120 kmph, the storm has triggered high alerts across Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha, prompting extensive preemptive measures including school closures and urgent evacuations. The looming threat comes less than a week after Cyclone Arnab ravaged the same region, particularly causing deadly landslides in Odisha hilly Gajapati and Kandhamal districts, where the death toll has now risen to six with ten people still missing. Learning from Arnab's destructive aftermath, authorities have shifted their focus to landslide-prone areas, with Odisha identifying about 150 vulnerable locations in Gajapati district for immediate evacuation. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has cancelled his scheduled Delhi visit to oversee preparedness, while six NDRF and seven SDRF teams have been deployed to assist with rescue and relief operations. As Murasu draws closer, extremely heavy rainfall warnings are in effect for coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and parts of Tamil Nadu and Telangana, raising fears of fresh floods and further landslides. Schools and colleges remain shut in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Guntur today, November 2, as the region braces for its second major cyclonic impact in quick succession. Residents are urged to follow official advisories, with ongoing efforts focused on ensuring the safety of those in vulnerable coastal and hilly regions.
