Delhi Fuels Green Skies: Global Aviation Leaders Target Net-Zero by 2050

New Delhi is set to host the second Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) conclave from September 28, bringing together global aviation giants and policymakers to accelerate India's role in decarbonizing air travel. This crucial two-day summit aims to solidify pathways for large-scale international SAF capacity-building, attract green investments, and push the aviation industry closer to its ambitious Net Zero 2050 goal. With India striving to become a global SAF hub, the conclave is expected to ignite critical discussions on policy frameworks and technological advancements to achieve sustainable aviation. India's push for Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a big deal, especially as the country has already committed to mandatory SAF blending targets for international flights: 1% by 2027, scaling up to 5% by 2030, in line with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) mandate. The government recently updated its Aviation Turbine Fuel regulations to allow SAF blending, showing a clear intent. Local Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are already stepping up, with Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. partnering with LanzaJet to boost domestic SAF production. Experts believe India can produce SAF up to 40% cheaper than global benchmarks by using agricultural residue and low-cost green hydrogen, potentially positioning the nation as a significant exporter. Looking ahead, the conclave will be a hotbed for strategic partnerships and technology showcases, focusing heavily on viable production routes like Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology, which leverages India's strong ethanol production base. Over 1,000 delegates from more than 25 countries, including major airlines, airports, and energy firms, are expected to hash out the roadmap. The outcome will not just shape India's green aviation future but also significantly influence global efforts to reduce aviation emissions, turning environmental responsibility into an economic opportunity.
