Europe is facing an urgent energy crunch as the mighty Danube River has plummeted to record-low water levels, forcing critical nuclear power plants in Hungary and Romania to slash output or shut down completely. Hungary's Paks Nuclear Power Plant, a cornerstone of its energy supply, has seen its output drastically cut, narrowly avoiding a full shutdown on August 3rd, while Romania's Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant has already powered down one reactor and is grappling with similar challenges for its second unit. This unprecedented situation, driven by severe drought and relentless heatwaves, threatens power stability across Central and Eastern Europe. The dramatic drop in the Danube's water flow, reaching levels as low as 1,500 cubic meters per second in Romania – less than a third of its usual July average – directly impacts the cooling systems of these nuclear facilities. The Paks plant, which provides nearly half of Hungary's electricity, had fallen to just 240 Megawatts at one point, far below its usual 2,000 Megawatts. Meanwhile, Romania has even resorted to extraordinary measures, with its naval forces using explosives to redirect water towards the Cernavodă plant in a desperate bid to maintain operations. With no significant rainfall forecast and extreme heat expected to persist, the energy outlook remains grim for weeks to come. Both Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar and Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan have warned of a looming energy crisis, urging citizens and industries to conserve electricity. As these nations scramble for alternative power sources and increased electricity imports, the event underscores Europe's growing vulnerability to climate-driven disruptions, pushing leaders to accelerate long-term solutions for energy resilience and water management.
