Dharashiv, once synonymous with agrarian distress, is rapidly transforming into Maharashtra's premier wind power hub, attracting over ₹13,000 crore in investments for 495 planned projects totaling more than 2,179 MW. This dramatic shift is already well underway, with 242 projects, accounting for over 814 MW, having been commissioned in the past three years, cementing the district's pivotal role in the state's ambitious clean energy transition. This emergence is powered by Dharashiv optimal geographical conditions, including stable wind corridors on the elevated Deccan plateau and extensive non-irrigated land, alongside robust transmission infrastructure. This regional surge is a critical component of Maharashtra's recently unveiled Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Policy 2025-36, which targets an ambitious 100 GW of renewable capacity and aims for a 65% renewable energy share in its total electricity demand by FY 2035-36. The policy's mandatory Energy Storage Obligation for new projects exceeding 100 kW directly addresses the intermittency challenges inherent in wind power. Nationally, India, the world's fourth-largest wind energy market, is aggressively pursuing 100 GW by 2030 and 155 GW by 2035, bolstered by a record 6.1 GW addition in FY 2025-26 and the recent launch of the WT-MARUT portal to strengthen the wind turbine supply chain. Looking ahead, while favorable policies and private investment are driving this growth—evidenced by projects like ACEN and BrightNight's 115 MW Optima Maharashtra hybrid facility already commissioning in Dharashiv—challenges like land acquisition and grid integration persist. The focus will increasingly shift towards accelerated implementation, ensuring seamless power evacuation, and promoting hybrid wind-solar projects to provide round-the-clock dispatchable power, further solidifying Maharashtra's position as a leader in India's green energy future.
