Dharavi Redevelopment Faces Scrutiny Amidst Contested Evictions in Ganesh Nagar-Meghwadi

The massive Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) is under fire after a recent demolition drive in Ganesh Nagar-Meghwadi, with residents claiming illegal evictions without proper notice. Project authorities, however, insist that all legal procedures were followed before the August 6, 2026 action, stating that comprehensive public and individual notices, hearings, and counseling sessions were conducted over several months. Out of 16 structures identified for removal, only four required police assistance after repeated non-compliance, while rehabilitation aid was offered to all affected families. This flashpoint highlights the ongoing challenges of urban transformation in one of Asia's largest slums. The DRP, a joint venture between the Government of Maharashtra and the Adani Group, aims to convert 253.7 hectares of Dharavi into a modern township by 2042. However, the process is fraught with tension, as many residents express fears of displacement, gentrification, and inadequate compensation, often citing concerns over the continuity of rental assistance versus the desire for on-site transit housing. The DRP is pushing to clear Sector 6, where Ganesh Nagar-Meghwadi is located, by September to make way for crucial public and railway infrastructure as well as rehabilitation buildings on Mahim and Matunga Railway Lands. With the first phase of 10,000 rehabilitation homes targeted for completion within 18 months, the project faces intense scrutiny to balance its ambitious development goals with the human rights and livelihood concerns of Dharavi dense population.
