The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is experiencing a significant economic rebound, with its mutual trade expected to hit a record $102 billion in 2026, marking a robust 7.3% growth after a slight dip last year. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, speaking at the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council meeting in Cholpon-Ata today, highlighted strong macroeconomic indicators like growing GDP, industrial production, agriculture, and retail trade across member states, signaling resilience despite global uncertainties. This positive momentum underscores the bloc's strategic shift towards deeper digital integration and the removal of trade hurdles, moving beyond traditional market cooperation. Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov echoed these figures, noting that intra-EAEU trade reached $95 billion in 2025, and projected the impressive surge to $102 billion this year, showcasing the bloc's importance for member states' external trade. The push for closer ties was also evident at the May 2026 Astana summit, where EAEU leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussed attracting international interest and intensifying trade liberalization talks, notably with India. While 2025 saw a 3.5% decrease in trade, the current recovery points to successful efforts to counter external factors and foster a stable economic environment. Looking ahead, the EAEU is set to implement crucial agreements, including a new Electronic Commerce Agreement to create unified rules for digital trade and a pact for mutual recognition of academic qualifications, boosting the free movement of skilled professionals. Plans are also in motion to establish a common financial market, allowing brokers to operate across all five member states, further deepening investment cooperation. These initiatives, coupled with renewed focus on industrial cooperation and leveraging Artificial Intelligence, aim to ensure sustained growth and solidify the EAEU position as a dynamic economic force on the global stage.
