Scientists from India's Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi have uncovered a subtle but significant clue to Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) hidden in the eyes: the rhythm of pupil responses during attention tasks. Their new study reveals that unmedicated children with ADHD show about 23% greater variability in how their pupils react from one moment to the next during memory games, suggesting a unique pattern in how their brains handle attention. This breakthrough comes as current ADHD diagnosis often relies on subjective assessments and behavioral observations, which can be time-consuming and inconsistent. Researchers globally are increasingly turning to 'ocular biomarkers' – measurable signs in the eyes – to find more objective ways to identify neurodevelopmental disorder. Beyond pupil dynamics, other studies have explored retinal thinning, blood vessel patterns using AI, and electrical activity in the retina via electroretinogram to distinguish ADHD and even autism spectrum disorder, highlighting the eye's potential as a 'window to the brain.' While these eye-tracking methods are not yet ready to replace a doctor's diagnosis, they offer a promising path forward. Future research, especially larger and longer-term studies in real-world settings, will be crucial to confirm if these subtle eye patterns can reliably complement existing diagnostic tools.
