Southend United newly formed Under-23 team is set to compete in the first-ever Next Wave Championship this season, marking a significant step in the club's youth development strategy. This new Under-21 competition aims to provide crucial competitive experience for emerging talent, bringing them closer to professional football. The club established its Under-23 squad this summer specifically to bridge the gap between their Academy and the first team, already seeing four youth graduates sign professional contracts. Blues coach Danny Heath emphasized that joining the Next Wave Championship offers a structured program of fixtures, including games against EFL opposition like MK Dons and Oxford United, helping to ensure the youth system is 'EFL-ready' for Southend United eventual return to the English Football League. With nine founding clubs participating, the championship will feature a 16-game regular season, followed by a post-season play-off series, culminating in a grand final at Stadium MK. This setup will provide valuable playing time and exposure for young players like Josh Barrett, Mitchell Ward, Nikolay Zlatev, and Jack Stone, who recently signed professional deals, giving them a clear pathway to establish themselves in Southend United senior squad.
