The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has launched HungerMap Live, a modernized intelligence platform designed to transform global hunger data into early action. This next-generation digital monitoring tool integrates extensive food security data, analysis, and predictive modelling with support from Google, offering AI-assisted forecasting for over 50 countries and specifically identifying 16 WFP designated "Hunger Hotspots" facing catastrophic hunger. The platform also includes a specialized layer on "Micronutrient Intake Adequacy," developed with the Gates Foundation, to identify populations at risk of hidden hunger. This launch comes at a critical juncture, as the number of people facing IPC5 Food Insecurity, the most severe form of hunger, has surged 15-fold since 2019, projected to reach 1.4 million by 2025. Moreover, funding for global food security monitoring has alarmingly declined, with WFP data footprint shrinking by 25 percent in the past year, underscoring the urgent need for efficient, data-driven interventions. The platform's emphasis on early warning aligns with WFP experience that every dollar invested in anticipatory action yields a minimum of seven dollars in savings, crucial in an environment of rising global food security needs driven by persistent geopolitical conflicts, climate change impacts, and global inflation that collectively strain supply chains and reduce purchasing power for vulnerable populations.
