G12R Solar Cells Reshape India's Green Energy Future as Manufacturers Race to Adapt

Indian solar manufacturers are rapidly switching to G12R-based TOPCon solar cells, a major change that will make solar power projects cheaper and more powerful across the country. This shift has become clear in recent months, especially after the latest update to the government's Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) List-II in August 2026, which now includes new G12R versions from big players like Emmvee Energy, Waaree Energies, and Avaada Electro. This move helps India's solar industry build more locally-made, high-efficiency products, moving away from older technologies. The main reason for this change is that G12R cells, with their rectangular shape, pack more power into each solar panel without making the panels too big, which helps reduce the overall cost of setting up a solar plant, known as Balance-of-System (BOS) costs. Companies are also choosing N-type TOPCon technology, a global trend, because it offers better efficiency and reliability. Premier Energies, an early leader, already uses G12R in its 7 Gigawatt (GW) cell line and recently opened a new 5.6 GW module factory in March 2026, showing a big push towards this new standard. Even though some companies like Waaree have faced temporary dips in production while upgrading, they are investing heavily to keep up with this fast-changing market. With new rules from the ALMM requiring modules to use approved domestic cells from June 1, 2026 (though an exemption for some projects extends to December 31, 2026), Indian manufacturers are now strongly encouraged to invest in advanced local cell production. We will see more manufacturers like ADM Solar, who plans to start G12R cell manufacturing by early 2027, adopt this technology. This push for G12R and TOPCon cells is crucial for India to meet its ambitious renewable energy goals, making solar power more accessible and affordable for everyone, from large power plants to home rooftops.
