Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has greenlit over Rs 508 crore for critical upgrades to national highways in West Bengal Birbhum district, a move set to significantly enhance road safety and slash travel time. Announced via a post on X this past Saturday, the allocation of Rs 508.66 crore targets the strengthening and selective widening of key stretches of NH-14 and NH-114, directly impacting commuters and freight movement across the region. This latest funding underscores the Centre's accelerated focus on bolstering infrastructure in West Bengal, following several major announcements in recent months. Just last month, Gadkari unveiled a massive Rs 61,500 crore highway corridor linking Siliguri with Guwahati and Shillong, alongside plans for a Gorakhpur-Siliguri expressway, highlighting a concerted push for improved connectivity across the East and Northeast. Additionally, the approval of greenfield Kolkata and Siliguri Ring Road in August, and Rs 1,042 crore for six other road projects in September, signal a robust pipeline of infrastructure initiatives aimed at stimulating regional trade and overall economic growth. With these projects, the focus now shifts to efficient execution and timely completion, which are crucial for realising the promised benefits of smoother journeys and enhanced commercial activity. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways continues to emphasize the use of innovative and sustainable materials, such as municipal waste in road construction, pointing to a broader strategy for India's infrastructure development. Stakeholders will be closely watching how these investments translate into tangible improvements on the ground, further integrating West Bengal into the national economic grid.
