Get ready to shell out more for your mobile connection, as India's top telecom companies – Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) – are expected to increase their mobile recharge rates by 12-15% in the next three to four months. This likely tariff hike, predicted by a Centrum Institutional Research report, comes after nearly two years without major price adjustments and will impact millions of users across prepaid and postpaid plans. The move is largely driven by the telecom operators' urgent need to boost their Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) and strengthen their financial health, especially after huge investments in rolling out 5G network across the country. While the sector's gross revenue rose to ₹1.05 lakh crore in the March 2026 quarter, and Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) saw a 9.45% jump, telcos are still grappling with high operational costs and significant debt. The government, through the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and TRAI, has indicated it will not interfere, believing the market has enough competition and that companies need room to recover and invest in better services. Consumers should anticipate higher costs for their popular recharge packs, with experts suggesting that future tariff increases might even involve new pricing structures where heavy data users pay more. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are projected to continue adding subscribers, while Vodafone Idea is also working to expand its 5G presence. This shift could push more users towards fixed wireless access (FWA) solutions as companies aim to monetize their extensive 5G infrastructure.
