A big move in the global push for cleaner manufacturing just happened! French company GravitHy, which focuses on making low-carbon iron, has officially teamed up with Italy's Danieli Group to build a massive direct reduction plant in Fos-sur-Mer, France. This plant is a game-changer, aiming to churn out 2 million tonnes of Hot-Briquetted Iron (HBI) every year using only green hydrogen, drastically cutting carbon pollution from steelmaking. This partnership comes at a crucial time as Europe pushes hard to clean up its heavy industries. With new rules like the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) starting this year, European steelmakers are facing higher costs for importing dirty steel, making local, green alternatives like GravitHy HBI super important. This project, backed by a €3 billion investment, will also sit right next to a modernized Marcegaglia plant, creating a hub for green steel production in the region. GravitHy and Danieli are now moving towards a Final Investment Decision (FID) in 2027, with the goal to start the plant by late 2030. If successful, this project will not only create hundreds of jobs but also set a new standard for how iron, a key ingredient for steel, can be made without harming our planet. Keep an eye on Fos-sur-Mer; it's quickly becoming a hotspot for the future of clean industry.
