In a decisive move set to significantly energize its vital coastal economy, the Gujarat government has scrapped the long-standing 20-meter length restriction on mechanized fishing boats, making virtually all eligible vessels across the state immediately qualified for crucial Value Added Tax (VAT) relief on diesel fuel. The decision, finalized by the Gujarat Cabinet yesterday, July 8, 2026, aims to deliver a substantial financial boost to thousands of fishermen, directly addressing one of their biggest operational costs. Previously, only smaller boats qualified for the subsidy, leaving a large segment of Gujarat's fishing community—including those operating larger deep-sea fishing vessels—at a disadvantage. Now, more than 18,000 registered mechanized fishing boats are expected to benefit from a 'Diesel Card' scheme, offering VAT relief of up to ₹15 per liter on diesel purchases. This policy shift, announced by state government spokesperson Jitu Vaghani after the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, is designed to reduce daily fuel expenses, bolster financial stability, and enhance incomes across the sector. To avail this new benefit, boat owners must ensure their vessels are registered on the Central government's 'Real Craft Portal' and hold a valid fishing license. This proactive measure not only strengthens the livelihoods of Gujarat's fishing community but also underscores the state's commitment to supporting its marine fisheries, which already leads India in marine fish production. The government is urging all eligible fishermen to complete the necessary registrations without delay to leverage this timely financial relief.
